etymology

From the prefix pra- (“forth, forward”) and the verbal root √yuj (“to join, to yoke”), the same root that gives yoga. The underlying sense is of something joined to a purpose or brought to bear on a task.

In classical usage, among others:

  1. use, application, employment
  2. general usage; the accepted form of a word or expression
  3. practice, as distinct from theory; the practical or experimental part of a discipline
  4. a plan, device or means
  5. a course of procedure; a prescribed form of a rite
  6. performance or representation, as of a drama; recitation, delivery
  7. an undertaking or beginning
  8. a result or consequence
modern usage

In Hindi, Marathi and several other Indian languages, प्रयोग is used chiefly in two senses: experiment, and use or application. The name of this site draws on both.
